Ship role and justification? Senior flight officer

Though Echizen is skilled and clever at his craft, his ability to adapt and change his entire style to match the situation is invaluable to such a position. He is young, but fully absorbs and uses his experience efficiently to keep up with others beyond his age. His competitive personality ensures that the Karura won’t see so much as a scratch, no matter what crazy maneuvers he might have to pull off to avoid surprise asteroids.

History:

Echizen Ryoma was born to Echizen Nanjirou, one of the most notorious space pirates in history. Though Nanjirou never actually killed anyone, Ryoma still had to live in the shadow of his infamy. Not that Ryoma minded in his early years; to the contrary, he enjoyed growing up on the run, learning to fly away faster and better than anyone else under his father’s competitive influence.

When Ryoma was about twelve years old, Rinko finally succeeded in getting her husband to set up in a secure location on earth. They ran a temple together and lived a quiet life. Ryoma, however, was not satisfied with that kind of existence. He needed the chance to surpass his father. At twelve he decided that the best way to do that (and stay in his mother’s good graces) was to do the same thing, but in the opposite direction. He boldly enrolled to train at the academy Earth Aerospace Alliance Academy under his real name; the stern woman in charge knew his father and either believed that Nanjirou would actually abandon his son on earth, or decided to let it go. Until he came of age, Ryoma went through training and occasionally served a few courier missions. He often found trouble, but always seemed to come out on the better end of it. Eventually, people decided not to question his luck so long as he was using it for their side.

Once eighteen, Echizen made more of an impressive splash than even those who knew him expected. He performed his missions well and seemed to build a network of his own alliances along the way. Despite his somewhat taciturn and snarky demeanor, the young brat was somehow spreading the reputation and influence of the alliance. When the senior flight officer of the Karura retired to be closer to his family, those in charge decided to see what the young captain Tezuka of the Karura would make of an even younger senior flight officer.

When Echizen walked into the bridge for the first time, one of the control personnel asked him if he needed help locating his family. Echizen stared. The staff noticed the name on his identification and turned a vivid red. Only when he started sweating in thick beads did Echizen hum vaguely and walk by him to the largest flight control seat, belonging to the senior officer.

“That’s him?”

“Echizen Ryoma.”

“His father is--”

“I thought that he would be taller.”

“Excuse me,” one of the older pilots all but sneered. “That seat belongs to me. I doubt that you can even see over the wheel.”

Echizen popped his soda tab loudly, took a long sip, and put it down in the holder. He glanced over the controls and turned his sharp, golden eyes on the looming figure. “So you’re the idiot wasting gas on mode three while we’re at rest.”

The man looked furious. Many around were stuck between horror and stifled laughter.

Deciding to ignore that expression, Echizen made a show of wiping down the wheel. “No pilot should have such sweaty hands," he threw him a belittling glance. “Mada mada dane.”

Ship role and justification? Technology Officer

Though he lacks enthusiasm for many things, Zaizen puts effort into his online presence. He has the problem-solving and strategic ability to serve as Shitenhouji’s next captain (not that there was much of a choice) and would prove a reliable officer. He’s quick to pick up on new information and gadgets and can keep the Karura’s computer mainframe running smoothly through updates and signal disruptions.

History:

For a son born into a family of mid-ranking fleet officers, Zaizen proved difficult to place in aptitude exams. His skills were all over the map and his unimpressed personality didn’t seem to suit any role in particular. Eventually, he decided on his own to pursue engineering, at least until half the academy’s computers went out from a botched update. When Zaizen got back online faster than anyone else, his advisor steered him down a different route. He found his niche. For the first time, Zaizen didn’t feel like dropping out of school to start a band. He graduated and helped to build and maintain mainframe and computer networks across different ships.

When it came time to staff the brand new, state of the art Karura, those in charge found that the older technology officers were having a hard time grasping the newest innovations. They assigned Zaizen to the Karura and he has been flying with it every since. Though he’s a little on the grumpy side, he keeps the ship’s main computer running smoothly and all aboard connected with their memes.

Zaizen sipped at a can of soup as he eyed the three open e-mails on his desktop. It didn’t necessarily matter what the temporary passwords were, but he did have a certain welcoming reputation to uphold. He put down the can, cracked his knuckles, and continued not care.

Last but not least, he fired off a question to the newly returned bounty hunter, Will the real Yukimura please stand up

That task done, Zaizen returned to observing how the navigation system handled the new update. He probably had about an hour or two before Atobe noticed the slight change in the Ice Bar’s network name.
