Karura

Karura

The spaceship Karura is structured as a giant ring that rotates to allow her inhabitants to enjoy Earth-strength gravity. When in motion between the star systems, fuel cylinders attach to Karura's centre to provide the energy needed for propulsion. These are removed and refilled during the times Karura orbits inhabited planets. Karura has been travelling for a number of years. New passengers do arrive, but most have been onboard for a while.

Areas

Bridge

Engage! Here is where the control of the massive spaceship takes place. The bridge of the Karura is the domain of officers, but off limits to anyone else not given express permission to be there.

Commercial

Shops for everything a star-striding veteran of the skies would need. From the fashions of Proxima Centauri to the exploding card games and ice lollypops of the Trappist-1 system, these stores sell it all. Intermittent visits to planets and space stations allow for restocking, and the acquisition of more unusual items.

Gym

The Karura gym boasts state-of-the-art workout equipment including treadmills, a lap pool, free weights, ellipticals, a yoga room, and an anti-gravity sauna for your after-workout cool down. Membership came with your boarding pass, so feel free to tone those biceps.

Entertainment district

Bars, restaurants and games are ready and waiting to help crew and passengers wile away the months until dawn. Each establishment aims to attract different clientele, guaranteeing a spot where you will feel comfortable.

Notable bistros and watering holes include:

Atobe's

Named after its entrepreneurial owner, this exclusive location is more commonly referred to as The Ice Bar; a reference to its elegantly frosted decor. The signature black marble bar is topped by a slab of semi-transparent quartz that catches the light of subtle overhead lanterns. A collection of smaller tables offer a setting for a more private rendez-vous or people watching. The substantial price is for the exquisite cocktail and the privilege of being seen holding it. Hours: 1900 - 0200.

[This list will be updated with the character roles.]

Quarters

Each of Karura's travellers have their own quarters, equipped with sleeping and sitting area. While there are no cooking facilities in the rooms, each is equipped with a replicator capable of producing any drink of your choice. To operate, simply speak your intention clearly. Malfunctions are of course a hazard. These typically occur when the user's mind is insufficiently focussed on their desired beverage.

Garden

The crew and passenger quarters are separated by a lush greenhouse of plant life. Running water tinkles out of fountains to hydrate the many trees and flowers. It is almost possible to forget the thousands of miles that separates you and true land.

Medical bay

For those who come down with some mysterious illness, the fine nurses and doctors of the Karura will make sure you go back to enjoying your stay aboard the luxury spaceship.

Science laboratories

The extreme environment of space is a fantastic opportunity for the curious minded to see how life adapts. Here, scientists at Karura grow all manner of living things and test the limits of new technology in this harshest of places.

Engine room

The heart of the Karura, the engine room keeps everything operating smoothly. Most of the time. Like the bridge, the engine room is off-limits to anyone that is not permitted to be there. From engineering, a passage leads to the central propulsion unit of Karura. Only experts should venture into this area, because away from the spacecraft's rim, there is no artificial gravity.

Docking bay and cargo

Smaller vessels and escape pods dock safely with Karura at this point. Large cargo is also stored here, for both the ship itself and (if needed and paid for) its passengers. Access is limited to those with permission from an officer.

Canteen

No one is allowed to starve on Karura; the paperwork is just too time consuming. So if you have spent all your money at the Ice Bar, or simply want a plain and simple meal before returning to work, the canteen will provide this free of charge.

General Information

Food and drink

Star Trek-like replicators are able to produce beverages out of thin air, but struggle with anything more substantial. By all means try to persuade your in-room replicator to serve a cup of ramen noodles, but be prepared for mixed results!

For more guaranteed satisfaction, the canteen and restaurants are available for three meals a day. The canteen is open 24/7 for those working night shifts or just peckish at 3 am.

Day and night

With no sun to determine daylight hours, day and night onboard the Karura are artificially set. In keeping with Earth time, the ship runs a 12/12 day/night cycle, where lights in the communal areas and corridors are dimmed during the nighttime hours. For those whose biology demands a different schedule, dark and sun rooms are provided in the Entertainment sector. Lighting in private quarters can also be adjusted for preference.

Money

With no uniform currency between worlds and Karura's long voyage duration, cash is no longer cool. People pay via chips embedded in their ID card. Tap the card on sensors at bars, restaurants and shops and your account will be debited.

For those who wish their identification to go undetected, black market cards can be acquired (for a substantial fee) that make the payment, but do not provide information on the owner of the transaction. However, these are illegal and very few would need to carry one.

Coming Aboard/Leaving the Ship

Game events will include times when the Karura is in orbit around a planet or meeting with a space station for fresh supplies. During these periods, passengers and crew will be granted 'shore leave' to leave the ship for a fixed period.

Between such stops, the Karura will be travelling rapidly between star systems and not close to any visitable location. Only in rare cases will characters have access to their own space vessel, so should be prepared to stay onboard the spaceship. The exception to this is if free travel is needed for a particular role (e.g. Yukimura as bounty hunter). Such cases can be discussed with the mods at time of character application.

The Earth Aerospace Alliance

The Karura and her crew work for the 'Earth Aerospace Alliance' (a similar organisation to 'Starfleet' in the Star Trek world). The EAA approve the route for Karura and lay down a basic set of ship protocols. Generally speaking, the organisation does not have a strong day-to-day role onboard the Karura (whose operation is left to captain and crew), but it's safe to say any crew members will have gone through the EAA training schools to gain their qualifications.

Various EAA Regulations can be found here.

Roles Aboard the Karura

Many roles are available on a spaceship! You can be a crew member helping with the maintenance and operation of Karura, or running one of the businesses this huge ship hosts.

Some positions are limited (for example, we can only have one captain) but others may have multiple people in similar jobs. We'd like a wide variety of roles, so feel free to suggest something different. Ideas for possible positions can be found here and here. Current filled positions on the Karura are listed here.
