Character name: Oshitari Yuushi
Character journal:
Age: 26 in October
Ship role and justification? Senior Medical Officer
Yuushi likes to think that he made his way up the ranks from lowly junior medical staff through his genius intellect and charming bedside manner, and not because his family owns a large chunk of the healthcare industry on several planets. The former is probably true, but the latter didn’t hurt his cause.
History:
If anyone had told young Oshitari Yuushi that he was going to grow up and become a Medical Officer on a shiny new spacecraft, he would’ve scoffed and gone back to reading whatever book of medieval poetry he was indulging in at the moment. The son of one of the foremost Earth-based healthcare-pharmaceutical companies with a rapidly growing inter-planetary presence, gifted with what many called a genius intellect, the only thing Yuushi had to do was outlive his parents to inherit a fortune. That was the plan until sometime around middle school, when Yuushi realised a very important fact about his pre-planned future as a pharma-magnate. It was going to be boring, and if there was one thing that Yuushi loved, it was a challenge.
Yuushi enrolled in the EAA’s medical academy and, as was the case when he actually decided to apply himself to something, he graduated top of his class. In keeping with his desire to go against expectations, he turned down the opportunity to work in one of his family’s premier hospitals and took up an internship with on board a space station, his skill allowing him to quickly rise up the ranks, before being granted assignment on board the Karura as their Medical Officer.

For the attention of our human residents and crewmembers: yes, we have perfected interstellar travel and live in a bright new future, but no, we do not yet have a cure for the common cold. My prescription is try and convince your replicators to produce chicken soup.
For our non human residents: If you’re experiencing symptoms similar to the human common cold, I suggest you come down to med-bay immediately.
Atobe: I will need a drink soon and it won’t be chicken soup.

If Yuushi was perfectly honest, one of the reasons he'd joined the EAA was to meet fascinating new members of alien civilizations, and he'd always had an interest in xenolinguistics. What he didn’t have as much of an interest in, was the mucous membranes of said alien civilizations and culturing distinctly unfascinating fluids to understand whether viruses that were harmless for humans would lead to some kind of Black Death for their planet.
A nurse handed him the newest set of reports and Yuushi sighed as he turned away from the microscope, slipping on glasses that he still didn’t need but still wore because apparently people across planetary systems trusted doctors who wore glasses.
“So...” he murmured as he scanned through them, half to himself and half to the still hovering nurse (who Yuushi would admit was attractive if he wasn’t put off by the mucous). “We might have a problem.”
Anything else: Yuushi promises not to sleep with his medical staff.

Journal: balloyarn.dreamwidth.org
Age: 31

Character name: Kikumaru Eiji
Character journal: This one >.>
Age: 25
Ship role and justification? Bartender at The Ice Bar
Eiji likes making friends and has a talent for being entertaining while mixing decent drinks and whipping up snacks. In the absence of Gundams to fly on the Karura, this seemed like the second best career choice.
History:
Eiji, as he loves telling anyone who cares to listen, is an alien. By which he means that he is the only member of the extensive Kikumaru family to have been born after they moved to a colony on Titan. Growing up with a stunning view of a gas giant planet hanging over the horizon, Eiji loved space and knew he was going to get up there one way or another because there was a whole universe to see, full of aliens like and unlike him, and it was awesome. His earliest dreams were to be any or all of the following: an intergalactic pop star, a space pirate, or a badass mecha pilot. After letting go of the first idea because he didn’t think he had the exotic pink skin for it, he stuck to the hope that the second or third would come to fruition, and even attended the EAA Academy enthusiastically until he was informed that they had no intentions of building mechas in the near future, and that with his atrocious math grade he shouldn’t really be flying anything.
Realising he had no real interest in being on a crew if it didn’t involve flying or exploding stuff once he graduated, Eiji decided not to take a deputation as security officer and instead set off on a series of odd jobs wherever he could – on ships and space stations – ranging from animal-wrangler to cargo hand. He was working at a restaurant on a station the Karura had docked at when he a patron told him about an opening that would be perfect for someone with his excellent reflexes, flair for extravagant displays of acrobatics, and perfect hand-eye coordination. He would be a bartender.
All that remained was was the small matter of convincing the bar owner to give him the job.

New on today’s menu is an Eiji special: Betelgeuse , Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse~ You’ll never guess what’s in it!!
On a totally unrelated note: No one’s allergic to mud, right?
Tag sample:
Eiji beamed at a compliment from one of the patrons at the bar, spinning on the ball of his foot to snatch a bottle he’d flung out of the air and neatly fill a glass. “Order up~” he grinned, passing it over. Another, vaguely purple looking customer (patron, a voice that sounded like Atobe said in his head) came up to the bar and he zipped over, chirping a greeting.
The purple(!) man(?) pointed silently to an item on the menu, one of the many fancy cocktails The Ice Bar served, and gave him what Eiji assumed was a questioning look. He probably wasn’t sure if something called an Altarian Hangover was any good.
“Oh, that’s a great choice!” he said, already tossing the ingredients into a mixer with every bit of showmanship the drink deserved. He served it up and moved on to pouring out wine and the beer on tap, almost too busy taking in the applause at his skills to notice that the purple man was turning, interestingly enough, a shade of brown as he had a severe allergic reaction to the ziziphus in the cocktail.
He only realised what had happened when a sighing Doctor Oshitari who had been in the right place at the right time came over to remind him to tell patrons the ingredients of their drinks before he served them poison, yes, even if they could just read the tiny print on the menu. More importantly, the doctor promised that he wouldn’t tell Atobe this time.
But, Eiji figured, nobody had died, so not a bad day at work.
Anything else: Eiji has dibs on any giant mecha they may find on their journeys.
