Ship role and justification? Physical Therapist

Having always had a disposition for helping people, Oishi naturally gravitated (space joke) toward a career in the medical field. And though he excelled in first aid and rehabilitation treatment, he did not have the stomach for surgery or more… demanding medical operations, especially as on-board medicine so often involved removing alien parasites from one orifice and gelatinous space slugs from another. Physical therapy became a happy medium.

History: Growing up, Oishi had lived a fairly grounded life in a seaside port town on Earth. Though the advent of space travel had of course affected the daily lives of his parents and his grandparents before them, his family had always been homebodies– content to reap the rewards of improved technology and interstellar trade while staying firmly rooted to the ground. Oishi had always dreamed of a bigger life for himself– not necessarily adventurous or heroic (and definitely not dangerous), but something more fulfilling than living out his life on one planet when there were so many others to explore. And there was always something appealing about the romantic notions of space and the stars.

At first, he enlisted in the Earth Aerospace Alliance Academy with the intent of going into police work or security, or on the path to become an officer like so many of his classmates and friends. However, after an accident in public transport involving a heavily-pregnant alien injured Oishi’s wrist, the short time away from his studies and in EAA Academy’s medical facility had him sorting his priorities. Was he really cut out for security, or police detail? Was his heart really into being an officer? The more time he spent at follow-up appointments at the med station, and in rehabilitation sessions for his wrist, the more drawn he felt to a career where he’d be able to help people similarly. And with frequent trips to space, on-board medical personnel were always in demand.

For the most part, Oishi specializes in acclimation therapy– that is, helping new inhabitants acclimate to the artificial gravity on-board the Karura, or in preparing them with exercises and physical therapy (as needed) before they touch down at a space station, to avoid conditions like decompression sickness. For those inhabitants with chronic injuries or a difficult time maintaining acclimation, he provides physical therapy sessions and massage. (And probably a lecture on proper exercise.)

(Incidentally as a result of the pregnant alien mishap and an unfortunate accident at the hospital involving imprinting, Oishi now has a small handful of alien blobs that he keeps in a tank in his quarters, and he pretends to be inconvenienced by but secretly mothers.)

Journal sample:

Everyone~!

We’ll be docking at the space station on the Moon of Endor soon, please make sure you’ve adjusted the oxygen and pressure levels in your cabins for at least five hours prior to our landing to avoid any unpleasant cramping. (Is there a pleasant kind of cramping…? Hm.) Ah, anyway, and make sure to take proper precautions when coming back aboard as well. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

If you have any specific concerns, you can find me in the Medical Bay. Until then, stay safe! And stretch!

-Your friend in safety, Oishi Shuichiro

Tag sample:

“All right, I’ll divide it up among all of you,” Oishi carefully took a rather unappetizing-looking flavorless ration cracker he’d squirreled away from the Canteen at lunch, and gently crumbled it in his fingers, the powder falling into his cupped palm. Opening a cylindrical glass container on the corner of his desk, he sprinkled the powder over the surface of the glowing blue liquid inside– offering a generous amount. What was left in his hand, he dusted out over the trash bin.

Inside the glass tank, three purplish-blue gelatinous blobs pulsated like jellyfish to the surface, affixed what must have been their mouths to the floating bits of food, and sucked them into themselves. Small bioluminescent green spots across their skin lit up in what Oishi had been interpreting as “happiness.” Soon, they were crowding one another at the top, poking and prodding with starfish-like limbs. “Hey, you have to share that,” Scolded Oishi, snapping the lid back into place over the tank, and knocking on the glass with his fingertip.

Honestly, he’d never meant to take on the responsibility of these barely-sentient alien blobs, but so long as he was their mother–er, father, they were going to be well-behaved.

Anything else: I can’t believe the space blobs are canon
