Atobe Application
Journal:
Age: (at least 18, please) 36
Timezone: JST
Character name: Atobe Keigo
Character journal:
Age: 25
Ship role and justification? Bar proprietor. With a family fortune delving well into billions of yen, Atobe knows how to run a business. An exclusive venue on a major space vessel allows Atobe both the capital from an interstellar clientele base, and the opportunity to ensure the family name remains part of high society, regardless of the planet.
History: (What is their background? How did they come to be on the Karura?)
The arrival of interstellar travel caused many to dream of tea with their alien neighbours. It caused Atobe’s grandfather to dream of money; a fact that made no difference to his sleep patterns whatsoever. The family’s international business interests expanded to neighbouring habitable worlds, but the new distances presented a problem: how could such subsidiaries be properly monitored?
The solution came from Atobe himself. As expected, Atobe Keigo graduated from business school with top grades and several years early. It was commendable, but hardly surprising for the scion of the company that featured in every textbook. His youth meant the top roles in the family cooperation on Earth were not yet free, so he proposed the bar on Karura.
Karura’s journey between planets allowed Atobe to personally check on the affairs of the most distant branches of his family business, and provide the only drink that came in a glass more expensive than a ship’s engine. The bar’s clientele came to talk business, meet the young heir bartender, and be seen in an establishment bearing the Atobe name. Deals were discussed, money exchanged and the Atobe hand remained firmly on the galaxy’s pulse.
Journal sample:
To the individuals who graced my bar with their presence early last night, if you have to ask the prices of the drinks it is safe to assume they are more than your pocket money. We also do not prepare ‘sex on the beach’ in any definition of that phrase.
The Ice Bar has taken a delivery of Baltimeone ice wine. The crates appear to be padded with small packets of unidentified crystals. Tezuka, if these transpire not to be drying salts then you really should work on your security.
Tag sample:
Atobe wiped down the glass with practiced ease. Despite being behind the bar from 7 pm until 2 am, his black silk shirt still looked as if it had been freshly pressed ten minutes before. He scanned the space for his remaining customers.
The nervous looking man at the end of the bar had been sipping the same gin and tonic for the last four hours. No doubt he was a junior salary man, trying desperately to be seen in all the right places. When one of the Ice Bar’s underling bar tenders had passed him his drink at 10 pm, the man had swallowed half of it in a nervous gulp, before recalling it was his ticket to keeping his seat and imbibing the rest in minute dribbles. His last month’s paycheque had likely gone into that beverage.
In the middle of bar sat three of the executive managers for the Atobe cooperation based on the planet Karura was presently orbiting. They were having a loud financial meeting, keen to ensure their successes reached the ears of the elegant bar manager. Atobe’s lips curled: he had already been through the subsidiary’s figures and knew their profits to be mediocre at best. Not enough to get involved, but enough to let them know he was watching.
Sitting back from the bar at one of the softly lit tables was a final figure. Atobe exhaled through his nose as he finally allowed his gaze to sweep in the man’s direction. That customer was a problem.
Anything else: Ice... ice ... baby?

Fuji Syuusuke Application
Journal:
Age: (at least 18, please) 36
Timezone: JST
Character name: Fuji Syuusuke
Character journal:
Age: 25
Ship role and justification? Outreach Officer
Communication is key to teamwork, and Fuji ensures that the Karura crew and passenger bodies stay in good contact with one another. From publishing the weekly ‘Captain’s Report’ to regular updates ranging from engineering to the latest drinks available at the Ice Bar, no one onboard the Karura has an excuse for feeling out of the loop.
Fuji’s photography skills, his perpetually friendly demeanour and ability to understand people (albeit not always benignly applied) make him a strong candidate for this role.
History: (What is their background? How did they come to be on the Karura?)
Fuji initially enrolled in the EAA Academy, achieving excellent grades in his early years that sent him into the stream for officer training. While Fuji continued to excel in every written examination, his instructors became increasingly concerned. Fuji showed little desire for leadership and moreover, simulator exercises with him in charge typically ended with 2/3rds of his crew mates in counselling and at least one exiting the EAA program entirely. Left with no choice, the EAA Academy heads eventually suggested Fuji explore other career paths, citing ‘psychological incompatibility’, while still insisting it was nothing personal against the young tensai.
Unperturbed by this turn of events, Fuji left the Academy and published a collection of photographs entitled ‘training for success’, showing the harsh reality of EAA schooling, from exhausted meal times to public showering. The still images were a roaring success and the Academy lost still more trainees to Fuji Syuusuke.
Deciding that the young man owed them employees, the EAA offered Fuji a position as outreach officer on board the Karura. The ship was under the command of the Karura’s most promising officer, who had scored top marks in all psychological exams and therefore stood the highest chance of keeping his sanity around the photographer. Fuji was able to apply his knowledge of space travel to his gift of presentation and best of all, the Karura wasn’t due to return to Earth (and prospective trainees) for quite some time. What could possibly go wrong?
Journal sample:
Tezuka, we need to make a time to record this week’s ‘Captain’s Report’ on the Karura. At the moment, the only story I have is that you were wearing the same shirt for three days in a row. This suggests either an infestation of Magrathean bed bugs in your quarters or that you are spending your nights with one of the passengers. Both options risk panic through the ship and the Ice Bar would close for a week. Let’s meet and have tea.
In other news, the Karura arrived at the third planet in the Vespian system yesterday morning. Do take care when eating the oysters: our science team warns they are potent aphrodisiacs. I’m sorry for forgetting to pass this on sooner.
Tag sample:
Fuji dragged his mouse over the frames of this week’s ‘Captain’s Report’. The contents was thorough, reassuring and frankly, quite dull. While that was probably for the best in a clip concerning the health of the ship, it didn’t do anything for Fuji’s viewing figures. He suspected most of the Karura’s passengers watched it mainly so they could stare at their captain’s face.
Fuji pulled open his browser and went to the web log of the Karura’s Science Officer, ‘Will it blend?’. Perhaps he could intersperse the clips to force people to wake up and pay attention.
Anything else: Sorry, Tez. But a captain's life is never easy.
