Ship role and justification?

Science officer assigned by the EAA. His job is to advise the crew on scientific matters and collect samples for other scientists in the EAA to study (these are often shipped off when they’re stopped at a major port). Inui’s intelligence, insatiable curiosity, meticulous recording of every iota of data, and ability to extrapolate scenarios based on existing information make him well suited for this role.

History: (What is their background? How did they come to be on the Karura?)

Inui had always been fascinated by the world around him since he was a child, spending much of his time conducting impromptu ‘experiments’ with various dubious substances. His parents diverted his energies more productively into the formal study of science, where his intelligence and exemplary grades served him well. After graduation, Inui served as a technician and eventually junior science officer on several starships, There, Inui was highly productive and reasonably well-respected, even if people found him a bit odd for his tendency to put newly discovered life forms in a blender. His excellent work ethic and seminal paper on the elastic properties and potential uses of the secretions of the Vilmese Bungaunga Pseudoslug resulted in the enthusiastic recommendation of him by his superiors to a science officer position on the Kurara, where he could finally draw a salary that could support his hobby.

One of the live specimens bound for the EAA museum collection seems to have escaped from a defective container. Please report if if you have seen a round pink jelly-like object 15.5 Earth Standard centimetres in diameter with several hundred legs, as shown in the attached picture. Don’t worry, it’s completely harmless, it just likes to crawl on people’s faces to eat dead skin cells. Page a service robot for collection or contact Science at extension XX.

After a final check of his recording equipment. Inui put on his labcoat and gloves, then pulled his face shield down over his glasses. A large food processor (bladed, not laser or sonication, because it was infinitely more fun to hear all the wet squelchy sounds) glistened on the counter. Satisfied, Inui started the recording with a click. Under the lights, the reflections on the face shield obscured most of his face save the barest silhouette of a maniacal grin.

“Welcome to this week’s vodcast,” Inui said, displaying a bucket filled with unfathomably slimy things that quivered. “With me today are some samples of a newly described species of slime mold from the planet Watdis. According to my data, this creature is able to rapidly re-form its structure upon gentle disruption.” He emptied the bucket into the blender.

“We will see if this also holds true using a more vigorous method.”

A soft, thoughtful “ii data” echoed into the microphone as the blender whirred to life and the contents began to splatter.

Anything else:

He has a video blog which is the space equivalent of “Will it Blend?”. Nobody knows what he does with the stuff afterwards.
